What is Underlay?

Underlay, also known as padding or cushioning, is a layer of material installed beneath flooring to provide various benefits such as support, cushioning, sound insulation, and moisture protection. It is commonly used under carpet, laminate, engineered timber, and vinyl flooring. Underlay helps to improve the comfort, durability, and performance of the flooring by providing a cushioned surface for walking, reducing noise transmission between floors, and protecting against moisture and subfloor imperfections.

 

What is a broadloom metre?

A broadloom metre is a standard measurement unit used in the carpet industry for the width of carpet rolls. It estimates the amount of carpet needed for a given area by representing the length of the carpet fabric, which is one metre wide and extends along the entire width of the roll. 

 

What is a floating floor?

A floating floor is not directly stuck to the subfloor. It simply sits on top of a plastic sheeting or foam underlay layer. When joined together at the edges, the sheets float as an interlocked sheet across the floor, hence the name.

4. Timber, Bamboo Hardwood Flooring

Can a Timber floor be installed on concrete?

Yes, you can lay timber over concrete, but it is best to consult a specialist for specifics based on your situation. 

 

Are some Timber floors harder than others?

Yes, different species have different molecular structures and different hardness. All species are subjected to a Janka test. The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear. The harder the timber, the higher the Janka rating.

 

How do I maintain my Bamboo flooring? 

The key to maintaining any sort of timber flooring is regular cleaning using methods and products that will not damage your floors. This means sweeping, vacuuming and dry mopping with the occasional damp mopping. Do note that excessive water or prolonged exposure can cause water damage
